Ok, guys,,,times have been tough for a lot of people lately,,,money is tight…and there always seems to be something to spend it on…take me for example…within the last couple of weeks,,,I’ve had unexpected car repairs,,an unscheduled ( and very expensive) trip to the dentist, a brand new lawnmower (well at least it was new when I purchased it last April) broke down on me and required 150.00 worth of repairs…sometimes it just seems to be one thing after another…and I’m sure I’m not the only one this happens to.

Hey guys, had an interesting edit job today from one of my favorite ad agency clients…IonLeap. It was a Rush Job for a Trade Show video for one of their clients, showcasing their product, to be played on an endless loop. We got the job in late last night and had to get it out the door tonight via Fedex for delivery tomorrow at 8:00 am…We had about 15 different video files to work from and here’s where it got interesting. We had to download the various files from FTP sites and YOUSENDIT…after several hours of downloading we had the raw materials to work with and had to come up with an approach to the video that would be effective, exciting, and out the door on time. One issue we had was that the video files were of all different types. The files included the following : AVI, DIVX, MOV, H.264, MP4, M4V, WMV, MPG2, M2V, AVCHD, M2t, FLV and a couple others thrown in for good measure. Working with all these file types in a single project under a tight deadline was challenging to say the least. In the old days with videotapes, formats were pretty standardized, we had 3/4″, Betacam, VHS, SVHS, 8mm, DV, DVCPRO, DVCAM, DIGIBETA, 1″, Digital 8, 3/4″ SP and a few others. Of course, we had to have the machines to play these formats and that required quite a large investment in hardware.,,but basically,,,as long as we had the proper machine, the format would play fine. Today it’s a little different, there are many different file types coming from various video cameras, still cameras, editing systems, etc. and they are not standardized…for example…a MOV file can contain within that mov wrapper any number of variations including mp4,avchd, h.264 and on and on. Some manufacturers cameras have proprietary formats that require special codec packs be installed on the edit system…some cheaper cameras that shoot hd video on small sd memory cards use highly compressed and proprietary formats that look great on playback…but require a tremendous amount of computer horsepower to edit with ….many editing companies are unable to work with some of these files, and few companies are able to handle as large a variety of files as we had to work with on today’s project. Video Data Services at 406 Chestnut St. in Union NJ is able to handle anything you throw at us. We spend countless hours researching and staying abreast of the latest file formats…so that when you need your video edited …we’re ready and able to get it done for you…We can also convert any file type to any other file type as well as converting your video files for use on your website, upload to youtube and video emails…Next time you have a file that no-one else can work with…give us a call at 908-964-4004…we’ll do our best to help you out…until next time,,,stay well…and keep on shooting that great video!

A couple of days ago I got a call from a distraught customer, She had a dvd of her wedding video that she and her husband enjoyed watching every year on their anniversary. Well, the last time they attempted to view their wedding dvd it would not play correctly. The picture was deteriorating and getting blocky, and the picture would freeze and skip…she actually had 3 copies of the disk…and each one was exhibiting the same problem..I found this very interesting…that all 3 copies would have the same issue…could it be 3 bad disks…could the original Master dvd have had a problem that was copied onto these disks…the caller assured me that all 3 dvds had played fine when they first got them…after some lengthy discussion, questions and answers..I found that the dvds in question all had paper labels on them. This could be one of the possible reasons for her problem. I have found through my experience working with dvds from the beginning of the recordable dvd around 2001 that paper labels on dvds can indeed cause the disk to become unplayable over time…I cautioned many other video producers early on to avoid placing these labels on their dvds…The response I most often got was “I’m using paper labels and they don’t cause any problems at all”….Well, that much was true..but as I explained to them at the time…I was thinking ahead 5-10 years…would the dvd still be playable then…It turns out my advice was dead on…I have seen many dvds that are several years old with paper labels become unstable and unplayable.
At Video Data Services we have never put paper labels on our dvds…we use a proprietary high speed dvd printer and top of the line Taiyo Yuden printable dvds..and print the label info directly on the printable disk surface. Now, what to do if you have important memories on dvds with paper labels…my recommendation is this…get the dvds out and play them…if they play fine all the way through…bring them in so we can make backup copies without labels…to ensure that your memories will be available for years to come..it’s a bit of Insurance on your memories that doesn’t cost a lot. If the dvds do have playback problems, bring them in so we can assess the situation. We may be able to copy to a new dvd…or we may be able to carefully remove the labels without doing further damage to the disk..and then again..copy them to new disks…We can even duplicate your dvds to Archival Gold dvds for long term storage. If the dvds still will not play or duplicate when the labels are removed..we can do further data recovery to salvage as much of your video as possible…Whether you have family video tapes that have been transferred to dvd…home movies, 8mm, s8mm, 16mm film converted to dvd, or even photos or data files on dvds…if you have paper labels ….give us a call to see how we can help recover and preserve your memories for the future. You’ll be glad you did.

I’ve had the pleasure recently to transfer several very meaningful audiotapes to cd for my customers…one audiocassette had a father singing a collection of his favorite songs dedicated to his wife and children. Another had several songs recorded by an up and coming band (from 20 years ago) whose lead singer had recently passed away. Another reel to reel tape had a child singing nursery rhymes with his mom in 1968. The memories were irreplaceable…and several of the tapes had started to degrade significantly, I captured the audio to our editing system and applied noise reduction, eq, and track separation and brought these maganificent recordings back to life…to be enjoyed and cherished once again…This week I finished a 30 hr. restoration project on our newest reel to reel audio deck…the Teac a4010s 4 track stereo 1/4″ reel to reel, completely rebuilding it and bringing back into mint condition (it was originally manufactured around 1965)…the deck is now ready to handle your most important 1/4″ audio reels…so go through the attic, basement, closets…and dig them out..and bring em in…I’m looking forward to gettting them over to cd for you …so they can be enjoyed once more…so stop by anytime…and even if you don’t have any reels…stop by anyway to say hello…I’ve got a brand new box of York Peppermint Patties on the counter…come on by and have one..it’s on the house!
